Illustration of the external, middle and inner ear. The middle
ear transmits sound waves from the tympanic membrane (ear drum) to the
inner ear. It consists of 3 tiny bones called ossicles, (the malleus,
the incus, and the stapes). The inner ear consists of fluid-filled
passages which transmit vibrations from the middle ear to microscopic
hairs. The vibration of the hairs is converted to electrical impulses
which travel through nerves to the brain. The loops above the cochlea
are semi- circular canals, which are responsible for balance.
